Saudi and IBM developing AI in several Arabic dialects

04/06/24

Saudi Arabia and IBM have joined hands to pioneer a transformative project - a generative AI programme designed to embrace the rich tapestry of Arabic dialects.

This innovative venture, spearheaded by the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), promises to revolutionise communication in the Arab world.

The cornerstone of this collaboration is the integration of SDAIA's Arabic Large Language Model (LLM), known as ALLaM, into IBM's established AI and data platform, WatsonX. With access to multiple LLMs, WatsonX empowers businesses to craft engaging editorial content, develop dynamic chatbots and even script immersive video game experiences.

Furthemore, ALLaM stands out for its remarkable ability to retrieve and generate information in various Arabic dialects, transcending linguistic barriers that have long confounded developers. According to its inventors, ALLaM has been trained on hundreds of millions of articles in both Arabic and English. This breakthrough heralds a new era of inclusivity and accessibility in AI technology, paving the way for enhanced customer service interactions, captivating storytelling and seamless programming. Moreover, this collaboration serves as a catalyst for unprecedented technological advancements, bridging the gap between tradition and innovation.

Arabic has a standard form used in news broadcasts and formal correspondence, known as Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), which is understood by most Arabs from Qatar to Morocco. However, perfecting each individual Arabic dialect, with its myriad dialects and nuances, presents a unique set of obstacles for developers. Importantly, through collective ingenuity a new chapter where AI transcends linguistic barriers and enriches lives is becoming closer to reality.

Join us as we unlock the infinite possibilities of AI, one dialect at a time.
