Saudi Arabias Recycling Initiative aims to be world leader

01/10/24

Saudi Arabia is poised to become a leader in waste management with a bold recycling strategy announced by the Ministry of Environment. The plan aims to recycle up to 95% of the Kingdoms waste by 2040, contributing approximately SAR 120 billion (USD 32 billion) togross domestic product (GDP) and creating over 100,000 jobs.

This comprehensive initiative targets the recycling of 100 million tonnes of waste annually, aligning with the country`s broader sustainability goals including the National Environment Strategy. Rapid urbanisation and population growth have strained existing waste management infrastructure, leading to landfill saturation, which poses significant environmental risks.

Saudi Arabia's landfill diversion target mirrors successful practices in advanced European and Asian nations, focusing on a multi-faceted approach that includes recycling and waste-to-energy technologies. The National Center for Waste Management (MWAN) plays a pivotal role in this transformation, consolidating regulatory frameworks and spearheading public-sector initiatives.

In order to support these goals, two key entities were established: the Saudi Investment Recycling Company (SIRC) and MWAN. SIRC facilitates investment in recycling infrastructure, while MWAN addresses regulatory challenges and promotes compliance through a unified Waste Management Law.

Achieving effective waste management requires strong government support and public awareness. Countries with low landfill rates have successfully implemented landfill taxes and strict regulations. Initiatives like Riyadh’s multi-bin system highlight the need for community engagement and education on waste segregation.

As part of Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia is uniquely positioned to transition from a linear waste model to a circular economy, focusing on reducing, reusing and recycling. This strategic shift will enhance environmental protection, boost local economic value and promote self-sufficiency in materials.
